Cayman Islands unit trusts have become an increasingly popular vehicle for Japanese investors who are seeking to gain exposure to global assets. A unit trust can be structured as a "stand-alone" trust or as an "umbrella" trust with each requiring a trustee to declare the trust and who will then delegate a series of functions and powers to third party service providers.

Japanese investors have long used domestic trusts to execute their investment programs. Increasingly, however, Japanese investors are turning to Cayman Islands unit trusts as they seek to implement more complex strategies and/or deploy or raise capital in the offshore alternative investment industry.

As annual invoices are being generated for those BVI companies that are registered in the first half of the year, it is time to start planning the liquidation of those entities that have reached the end of their life cycle, to ensure that unnecessary fees are not incurred.
In order to prevent the expense of annual 2018 government registration fees, an appointed voluntary liquidator will be required to file the final notice for a company on or before 31 May 2018. In order to meet this deadline, we recommend that the voluntary liquidation commence prior to 30 April 2018.
